LAKEWOOD, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say a man struck by a car and killed while walking on a freeway shoulder was a veteran Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy.

Investigators say Michael Haak was off duty and in his personal vehicle when he apparently had mechanical trouble Saturday on Interstate 605.

Sheriff’s officials say the driver who struck Haak stopped at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Haak died at the scene.

The 52-year-old had worked for the department for 29 years and was most recently assigned to the Lakewood station.
