NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) - The founder of the Newport jazz and folk festivals has received an honor from the city that hosts them.

George Wein (ween) received the Newport Medal of Honor from Mayor Harry Winthrop as the three-day jazz festival kicked off.

The Newport Daily News reports rgar the 91-year-old Wein was presented with the medal before Friday’s concert at the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

Wein recalled to the newspaper the times when the city and festival organizers were at odds, such as a 1971 riot. He says he is happy with the relationship they have now, and is proud to receive the medal.

The festival began in 1954 as a way to spice up the summers in the resort town. It’s now held annually at Fort Adams overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.
