NEW YORK (AP) - Kathryn Bigelow’s race-riots docudrama “Detroit” struggled to find a wide audience, while the poorly reviewed Stephen King adaptation “The Dark Tower” finally arrived to middling results.
Sony Pictures’ “The Dark Tower,” starring Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey, still managed to take the top spot in North American theaters with a $19.2 million debut. That pushed Christopher Nolan’s “Dunkirk” to second with $17.1 million in its third weekend of release, according to final box-office figures Monday.
“Detroit,” Bigelow’s ambitious reconstruction of the 1967 uprising, opened in more than 3,000 theaters after a limited release last week. Despite largely strong reviews, “Detroit” - the first film distributed by Megan Ellison’s Annapurna Pictures - debuted in eighth with $7.1 million.
