Nostalgia for all things ’80s has proven successful on streaming TV outlets with the success of shows like ABC’s “The Goldbergs” and Netflix’s “Stranger Things.”
Now YouTube Red is getting in on the act with a planned “sequel” of sorts to “Karate Kid” starring Ralph Macchio, who played plucky underdog Daniel LaRusso, and William Zabka, who played his tormenter, bully Johnny Lawrence.
The comedy series, titled “Cobra Kai,” centers on a renewed rivalry between Daniel and Johnny some 30 years after the climactic fight scene in the 1984 movie, as a “down and out” Johnny resurrects the infamous Cobra Kai dojo, The Hollywood Reporter explained Friday.
A YouTube executive credited the chemistry between Mr. Macchio and Mr. Zabka as playing a part in selling the company on their pitch for “Cobra Kai.”
“I don’t know whether they had rehearsed it, but they played the parts of their characters well. More than anything, it was just amazing to see them together again,” YouTube global head of originals Susanne Daniels told THR.
