OPINION:
President Donald Trump, in a heated phone call with Mexico President Enrique Pena Nieto, demanded the down-south leader stop saying publicly his government wouldn’t pay for the border wall.
How do we know that? Leaks. More White House leaks.
And this time, they come just a day before Attorney General Jeff Sessions is due to discuss a new and supposedly improved crackdown on White House leakages.
Let’s hope Sessions has the solution. This is getting ridiculous.
The Washington Post just reported on this latest leak, along with another one involving Trump’s similarly heated telephone conversation with Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, which took place a day after the talk with Pena Nieto.
The calls were widely and generally reported in February. But now we have all the dirty specifics, thanks to the leak to The Post, which reportedly has the full transcripts.
And it’s not really that Trump said anything the left could find politically useful — though no doubt, the anti-Trumpers will try, especially on the president’s comment about Vladimir Putin being “a pleasant call.”
But it’s rather the fact that here we go again — leaks. The transcripts came courtesy of notetakers at the White House who were said to have monitored Trump’s calls.
And The Post noted: “Both documents obtained by The Post contain notes indicating they were reviewed and classified by retired Lt. Gen. Keith Kellogg Jr., who serves as chief of staff on the National Security Council.”
Tighten up, White House. Unfiltered conversations that go forth between the president and foreign heads of state ought not be disseminated in the press — particularly when it’s a press that wants nothing more than to see this White House, this president, fail and leave in disgrace.
