NEWARK, Del. (AP) - A public hearing is scheduled this month on an Environmental Protection Agency proposal to add an area of contaminated groundwater in Newark to the National Priorities List of Superfund sites.
The site covers about 164 acres of commercial and industrial land in southeast Newark. Officials say the primary contaminants of concern are volatile organic compounds, including industrial solvents used in the dry-cleaning and metal industries.
The exact source of the contamination isn’t known, but state officials have identified potential source areas.
The city has six affected wells within the area and has been treating the water for decades to remove contaminants, maintaining compliance with drinking water standards.
The EPA will accept public comments through Oct. 2 and has scheduled a public meeting Aug. 15 at the Newark Senior Center.
