PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island officials say 224 college graduates have been selected for student loan relief.

The Providence Journal reports (https://bit.ly/2xtQECt ) the state’s Commerce Corp. and Gov. Gina Raimondo are awarding an average of $3,875 in tax credits for the winners of the Wavemaker Fellowships.

The program helps cover the cost of student loan repayments for professionals who live in the state and work in science, engineering and related fields. The program is meant to entice those who would otherwise accept a job elsewhere.

More than 325 people applied for the fellowship this year.

Commerce Corp. spokesman Brian Hodge says 54 percent of recipients graduated from a Rhode Island institution. He says 89 percent are Rhode Island residents who stayed in the state after graduation.
