SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A state strategy to curb violence and drug trafficking in a Salt Lake City neighborhood near an overcrowded downtown homeless shelter will cost $67 million.
State officials on Monday released the price tag over two years for a new effort that includes a stepped-up police presence, drug treatment and job training and placement.
House Speaker Greg Hughes and Lt. Gov. Spencer Cox say that state, county and city budgets will absorb most of the cost but officials will have to come up with $21 million to cover the rest.
They say the state will likely come up with about $11 million more for the efforts near The Road Home shelter while Salt Lake City and Salt Lake County will each pay about $5 million.
Officials did not detail how they’ll come up with the additional funds.
