The Washington Nationals activated right-handed pitcher Max Scherzer from the 10-day disabled list and outfielder Jayson Werth from the 60-day disabled list Monday.
Werth had not played since June 3 because of a left foot contusion. Werth fouled a ball off his foot and broke a bone, causing him to miss 75 games. Monday night, he played right field in his return because Bryce Harper remains on the 10-disabled list because of a hyperextended knee and bone bruise.
Scherzer missed two starts because of stiffness in his neck. The 2016 Cy Young Award winner had dealt with the problem in the past. This season, it put him on the disabled list for the first time in his career.
Outfielders Andrew Stevenson and Rafael Bautista were optioned to Triple-A Syracuse to make room on the 25-man roster for Werth and Scherzer. Also, infielder Stephen Drew (left abdominal strain) was moved to the 60-day disabled list.
