OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Mutual of Omaha executives are considering moving the company from their iconic building to a new home office in midtown Omaha.
“We’re thinking about it,” CEO James Blackledge said at a Thursday meeting in Omaha of the Association for Corporate Growth. The Omaha World-Herald reported that Blackledge said there’s no definite plan, location or timetable, but he also said a decision could come “in the not-too-distant future.”
The new headquarters wouldn’t be far from Mutual’s current office, which sits 33 blocks west of the Missouri River. The structure was built in five phases, with the first being completed in 1940. The dark tower that juts out from an adjoining multistory building is adorned at the top with the company’s Indian head logo. A dome-topped underground building was the last addition, completed in 1979.
Mutual’s $300 million Midtown Crossing development opened in 2009 and transformed several blocks of land just to the east and helped trigger redevelopment of nearby properties.
It’s not clear yet what might become of the current headquarters. “It’s an old building,” Blackledge said. “If you work in the building, you know it.”
About three-quarters of the 109-year-old company’s 5,300 employees work in Omaha. Mutual’s added 500 jobs in the past 3½ years, said Blackledge, a 28-year Mutual employee who became CEO in 2015.
