A $30,000 makeup bill over the course of three months has critics of French President Emmanuel Macron fuming.
Reports by the French political and news magazine Le Point on Thursday shined a spotlight on exorbitant beauty bills racked up by the nation’s president, which soon spread to major outlets across the globe.
The news comes at a bad time for Mr. Macron, who is already is under fire for contentious efforts to cut budgets and institute labor reform.
“We used a provider in an emergency,” a French official said, Le Point reported.
“Maybe he’s born with it … or maybe he just prefers fancy products,” a Fox report joked Friday, a reference to the famous Maybelline tagline: “Maybe she’s born with it. Maybe it’s Maybelline.”
The Guardian noted that Mr. Macron’s predecessor, Francois Hollande, was accused of “shampoo socialism” for similar bills — he tallied nearly $12,000 per month on makeup.
“The sum covers various services including press conferences and foreign trips where the person concerned has to travel with him,” an Elysée official told reporters, The Guardian reported Friday.
