PAWTUCKET, R.I. (AP) - Six individuals are facing drug charges following a three-month investigation into heroin sales in Pawtucket.

The Providence Journal reports (https://bit.ly/2wFyX62 ) local and federal law enforcement agencies conducted a probe in May, June and July of illegal sales of heroin and fentanyl.

Fentanyl is a powerful opioid often mixed with heroin. It’s led to hundreds of overdose deaths in Rhode Island.

Five of the six individuals hail from Pawtucket. A sixth is from Lincoln.

Police said the investigation included the seizure or purchase of approximately 65 grams of heroin and fentanyl, and the seizure of a .25-caliber handgun with an obliterated serial number.

The individuals face a range of charges including possession of heroin and marijuana with intent to deliver and carrying a dangerous weapon while committing a crime of violence.
