VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) - Some are calling for the removal of another Confederate monument in Virginia.
The Virginian-Pilot reports that a rally is scheduled for Thursday afternoon to demand the removal of a Confederate soldier statue in Virginia Beach.
Confederate veterans built the 27-foot-tall structure in the early 1900s. It’s located near a former county courthouse that now serves as city office space.
Organizations behind the rally include the Hampton Roads/Eastern Shore Progressive Democrats of America. They plan to meet at the statue at 4 p.m. They claim the monument “disgraces our city.”
Plans to rally in Virginia Beach follow discussions in Norfolk and Portsmouth to remove their respective monuments to cemeteries.
