TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - The Tucson Unified School District Governing Board has decided to make interim Superintendent Gabriel Trujillo the district’s permanent leader.
Trujillo was selected on Tuesday over three other candidates vying for the district’s full-time superintendent position. The candidates were former C.E. Rose K-8 School Principal Stephen Trejo, the district’s director of elementary and preK-8 schools Maria Marin and Donna Hargens, the former superintendent of Jefferson County Public Schools in Louisville, Kentucky.
Trujillo says he’s eager to start long-term planning within human resources, budgeting and relationship building.
Trujillo said his immediate goal will be to focus on recruitment and retention of kids.
He was named interim superintendent after H.T. Sanchez, the district’s previous leader, was ousted by the Governing Board in March.
