PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The Rhode Island Board of Elections has a new director after a 6-1 vote by the board.

The Providence Journal reports (https://bit.ly/2w2ISzj ) Robert Rapoza will now take over after serving as acting director for the past year. The dissenting vote came from board member and former state Sen. David Sholes, who chose his own nominee.

More than 60 applications were sent for the post that opened up after Robert Kando was terminated last year.

Kando sued the board in September, alleging the termination violated his right to due process. A judge dismissed the lawsuit in June.

The director who preceded Kando, Robert Fontaine, acknowledged obtaining state money under false pretenses and was given a five-year suspended sentence in 2005.
