CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - New Hampshire Sen. Jeanne Shaheen says she supports the decision to maintain an American military presence in Afghanistan, but she urges President Donald Trump not to discount the continued contributions of U.S. diplomats and local Afghan partners as part of the strategy.
Her comments followed Trump’s Monday night address in which he recommitted the United States to the 16-year-old war in Afghanistan.
Shaheen, a member of the Senate Armed Services and Foreign Relations committees, said she’ll continue to push for adequate resources to ensure the well-being of U.S. troops as well as a fully engaged diplomatic process.
Fellow Democratic Sen. Maggie Hassan said she appreciated that Trump acknowledged the importance of strong diplomatic engagement in South Asia. She urged him to reverse his plans to severely cut the State Department, which she says would undermine U.S. security interests.
