Donald Trump has a preternatural talent for using Twitter to communicate, but Taylor Swift is proving that literally re-booting your account can metaphorically overshadow a solar eclipse.
On Friday, Ms. Swift, who has gone nearly three years since releasing a studio album, mysteriously deleted all her posts on her social-media accounts, sparking rampant speculation that a forthcoming announcement on a new album is on the way. She also literally went dark on her eponymous website, showing a black background page with no text.
But on Monday morning, Ms. Swift’s account tweeted a mysterious 10-second video clip, which in two hours’ time has generated 43,000 retweets, 90,000 likes and 15,000 replies.
Various news sites glommed on to the development, and People magazine noted the rumors that Miss Swift is set to drop a new single, titled “Timeless,” at 2 p.m. Eastern, which, according to NASA, should fall in the middle of the eclipse in Nashville, where the former country singer has her official residence.
The pop singer’s last studio album, “1989,” was released in October 2014 and her last major tour, promoting the same album, wrapped in December 2015. According to Songkick.com, she only had one concert appearance in 2016, in October in Austin, Texas.
