PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - An internal investigation has found corrections staff did not violate jail policies after a Maine inmate hanged himself in a maximum security wing.
Sheriff Kevin Joyce announced the results of the investigation Tuesday, but he tells The Portland Press Herald (https://bit.ly/2tZcv2I ) the report will not be made public.
Joyce has previously said corrections officers at the Cumberland County Jail were checking on 26-year-old Dante Majeroni every 30 minutes, and his March suicide appears to have been timed between the checks.
He had been taken off a suicide watch a week earlier after a previous attempt.
Majeroni was brought to the jail Feb. 15 on a domestic violence charge.
His mother says the man has struggled with mental illness. Majeroni’s family contends jail staff did not do enough to protect him.
