John Podesta, Hillary Clinton’s former campaign chairman, said he loses sleep “every night” over President Trump’s Electoral College victory.
CNN’s Alisyn Camerota invited Mr. Podesta onto “New Day” on Tuesday to discuss the U.S. political landscape and the president’s rhetorical jabs at Mrs. Clinton. The lobbyist called Mr. Trump’s behavior “unprecedented” before admitting the election’s lasting effect on his psyche.
“You never saw that behavior from any other president who’s talking about the person they beat,” Mr. Podesta said. “I think it really just bugs the hell out of him that she got 3 million more votes than he did, and he keeps coming back to that. Obviously we bear the burden of having lost the Electoral College, so I lose sleep about that every night.”
Not mentioned in the exchange was WikiLeaks’ decision to publish Mr. Podesta’s stolen emails — roughly 50,000 — along with tens of thousands of emails belonging to the Democratic National Committee.
Numerous revelations caused by the document dump embarrassed the campaign and led to the resignation of then-DNC’s Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz.
“I think [Hillary Clinton has] reflected on the mistakes that she made, what she might have done different, but I think she’ll also talk [in her upcoming book] about where the country is and how to move forward,” Mr. Podesta added. “That’s what she’s always done in her life when she’s gotten knocked down. She’s tried to make a positive contribution coming out of that, and I think that that’s what this book will attempt to do.”
Mrs. Clinton’s latest book, titled “What Happened,” will be released by Simon & Schuster on Sept. 12.
