WEST LAKE OKOBOJI, Iowa (AP) - A historic resort in northwest Iowa is up for sale, marking another turn for a property that has been owned by six financial institutions since 2013.
The Inn at Okoboji Resort & Conference Center at West Lake Okoboji is being sold in an online private auction in September, the Sioux City Journal reported .
Jon Hjelm, a broker for The ACRE Co., will oversee the auction. He said the current owners are happy with recent improvements but that they feel like it’s a good time to sell when considering the property’s condition and the state of the economy.
“We will be promoting it all over the Midwest,” he said.
It’s unclear how much the property could sell for. The Dickinson County Assessor’s Office values the resort at more than $4.2 million, but properties often sell for more than the assessed value.
A 24-room hotel was originally built on the property in 1896. It was completely redone in 1955 after it was partially burned.
“Some of the families have been coming here for 50 years every summer,” said Mitch Brown, sales manager at the inn.
The resort has more than 150 rooms, 400 feet of lakefront area and a golf course. The Inn was recently renovated to have a softer, more soothing feel.
“It is one of the historic old landmarks on Okoboji,” Hjelm said. “It is just a really neat family-style resort.”
