The Nationals placed outfielder Brian Goodwin on the 10-day disabled list with a left groin injury Wednesday morning, calling up outfielder Alejandro De Aza from Triple-A Syracuse to take his place.
In a corresponding move, the Nationals transferred injured shortstop Trea Turner to 60-day DL to make room on the 40-man roster for De Aza. Turner went on the DL with a broken wrist June 30, and will be eligible to return to the Nationals in two weeks.
Goodwin injured his groin during a game against the San Francisco Giants on August 13, and hasn’t appeared since. The 26-year old was enjoying a solid season filling in for the injured Jayson Werth and Adam Eaton in the Nationals outfield.
In 74 games this season, Goodwin is hitting .251 with 13 home runs and 30 runs batted in.
De Aza, a nine-year MLB veteran, batted .280 in 56 games at Syracuse before his call-up to Washington.
A career .261 hitter in the majors, the 33-year old has played for seven other MLB clubs, most recently spending last season with the New York Mets.
Nationals outfielder who have been placed on the disabled list this season include Werth, Eaton, Michael A. Taylor, Bryce Harper, Chris Heisey and Goodwin.
