LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - The family and friends of the victim whose death was the impetus for the creation of Kentucky’s Victim Information and Notification Everyday system are pleading against granting parole to the man convicted of killing her.

The Courier-Journal reports that nine people spoke at Monday’s victim impact hearing to argue against the release of Donovan Harris, who is serving a life sentence for the 1993 rape and murder of Mary Byron. His parole hearing is Tuesday.

The now-47-year-old Harris had been released following his indictment on the rape charge without Byron’s knowledge. Byron was shot seven times at the Mall St. Matthews weeks later, on her 21st birthday.

Byron’s mother, Pat Byron, says a petition started by Byron’s former classmates asking for denial of parole has amassed over 6,000 signatures.
