SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) - A Massachusetts animal shelter will join with WWLP-22 News to host NBCUniversal Owned Television Stations’ “Clear the Shelters” third annual nationwide pet adoption drive.

On Aug. 19, the Dakin Humane Society will offer 50 percent off the adoption fees for small animals and select adult cats as part of an initiative to help families find and adopt pets in shelters across the country. The animals available for adoption include rabbits, birds, ferrets, guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, chinchillas, mice and rats.

The program was expanded nationally in 2015, when more than 25,000 pets were adopted. In 2016, more than 50,000 animals found homes.

Dakin has locations in Springfield and Leverett.
