TYRONE, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say a recently graduate of a suburban Rochester high school has been killed in a boating accident in the Finger Lakes region.

The Schuyler County Sheriff’s Office says a person fell overboard on Waneta (wah-NEET’-uh) Lake around 10 p.m. Thursday and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Deputies haven’t released the victim’s name, but officials with the Brighton school district say he was Owen Thomas, a 2017 graduate of Brighton High School. Thomas planned to start classes at the University of Rochester in the fall semester.

Police haven’t released details of the accident.

The 3.5-mile long Waneta Lake, located 60 mile southeast of Rochester, is located between Keuka Lake and Seneca Lake but isn’t considered one of the Finger Lakes.
