Authorities have identified a man fatally shot by officers after a police chase in south suburban Chicago.
The Lake County, Indiana, coroner’s office evening identified the man as 33-year-old Mark P. Coffey of Chicago Heights, Illinois. It says he suffered gunshot wounds but didn’t specify how he died.
The Crete, Illinois, police chief says his officers chased the suspected car thief into nearby Dyer, Indiana, early Thursday and he appeared to have a gun when the officers confronted him. Chief James Paoletti says the driver fled back into Illinois, where the car hit a pedestrian.
Authorities say the car returned to Dyer, where Coffey was shot by Indiana officers.

A suburban Chicago police chief says a suspected car thief appeared to have a gun when officers confronted him before he drove away in a chase that ended later when the suspect was shot to death in northwestern Indiana.
Crete, Illinois, Police Chief James Paoletti says his officers chased the car early Thursday to a church parking lot in nearby Dyer, Indiana, where the suspect acted as if he was going to shoot the officers. Paoletti tells The Associated Press the driver went back into Illinois where the car hit a pedestrian.

Chicago television stations are reporting that the shooting happened in Indiana following a police chase that started in suburbs south of Chicago. Back says he can’t confirm those details.
Television helicopter video shows the windows on the car’s passenger side broken, with the car partly off the street.
Back says he doesn’t yet have details about the circumstances of the shooting.
Calls to other police agencies weren’t immediately returned.
