ANDERSON, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina man has been sentenced to 11 years for a crash that killed a 49-year-old woman and injured her grandson.
Solicitor David Wagner said 30-year-old Jonathan Hamby of Starr pleaded guilty Thursday to felony driving under the influence, one count resulting in death and the other great bodily injury. Five years of probation will follow the prison sentence.
Prosecutors say Hamby was driving a company truck about 9 a.m. on May 4, 2016, when it crossed the median and hit a vehicle head-on, killing Loretta Pressley. Her then-4-year-old grandson suffered facial and pelvic fractures.
Hamby’s blood tested positive for methamphetamine.
Wagner says no child should have to see his grandmother die. He says the tragedy shows the dramatic and far-reaching results of driving while impaired.
