JACKSON, Ky. (AP) - Officials say they’ve gotten preliminary approval for funds to support two projects in eastern Kentucky.
The Lexington Herald-Leader reports U.S. Rep. Hal Rogers and the state Energy and Environment Cabinet announced this week that a $1.95 million grant will go to help fund a campground for elk-viewing in Breathitt County and a $1.15 million grant will help fund a training program for utility workers at Hazard Community and Technical College.
The campground is projected as a tourism attraction and will include trails for horses and off-road vehicles. The college program will train people to maintain utility substations and operate drones and cranes.
The grants come from Kentucky’s $30 million portion of the 2016 Abandoned Mine Lands Pilot program and are aimed at helping replace lost coal jobs.
