WASHINGTON (AP) - District of Columbia officials are unveiling design plans and more details about the replacement of the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge, an important commuter gateway.

Mayor Muriel Bowser’s office said in a statement Thursday that the new bridge over the Anacostia River will be built about 100 feet from the current one, which carries around 70,000 vehicles, pikes and pedestrians a day. The project will also include traffic changes and improving drainage and stormwater management.

Construction is expected to begin by the end of this year and last through 2021.

Bowser’s statement says the District has signed a $441 million contract with South Capitol Bridgebuilders for the first phase of the project.

According to The Washington Post, replacing the deteriorating 68-year-old bridge has long been in the city’s plans.
