BEEKMANTOWN, N.Y. (AP) - State police say a 72-year-old upstate New York man has drowned while paddleboarding on Lake Champlain.

Troopers say Peter Reed was approximately 100 feet offshore with a friend on a separate board when both fell into the water near Point au Roche just north of Plattsburgh. State police say neither was wearing a life jacket.

Investigators say high winds pushed Reed’s board away from him and he began to tread water. A nearby resident tried to rescue the two and threw a life vest to Reed. Troopers say Reed went under and did not resurface.

His body was found 40 minutes later and he was transported to a Plattsburgh hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly before noon.
