MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) - U.S. Rep. Annie Kuster is convening a House subcommittee field hearing on allegations of substandard care and conditions at New Hampshire’s only veterans hospital.

Kuster is the lead Democrat on the House Veterans’ Affairs Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations. She says the subcommittee’s chairman will join her at a field hearing in New Hampshire on Sept. 18.

Secretary of Veterans Affairs David Shulkin recently removed the hospital’s top two leaders and ordered a review after the Boston Globe reported on a whistleblower complaint filed by physicians and other staffers. He also has ordered the VA’s inspector general to launch its own investigation and plans to meet with the state’s congressional delegation at the hospital on Friday.

Kuster says she hopes the field hearing will help explain what went wrong and how problems can be fixed.
