PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A Providence man accused of assaulting two police officers and resisting arrest has been acquitted.

The Providence Journal reports (https://bit.ly/2o6X4mL ) 25-year-old Joshua Robinson was found not guilty Friday of two counts of simple assault and one count of resisting arrest.

Providence Police Department Sgt. David Allen testified that Robinson resisted arrest after running a stop sign and stuffing bags of crack cocaine in his mouth.

Police did not find any narcotics on Robinson. He also tested negative for drugs at the hospital.

Robinson sustained injuries to his face after the stop, including a gash to his forehead.

Robinson’s lawyer, Dawn Huntley, says public trust declines when a police department operates by a code of silence.

The 25-year-old has filed a federal civil suit against Allen and the Providence Police Department.
