MADISON, Wis. (AP) - University of Wisconsin-Madison student government is praising Republican leaders for removing provisions from Gov. Scott Walker’s budget that would have allowed students to opt out paying some fees.
Walker’s budget called for allowing students to opt out of paying fees that support student activities and organizations.
Associated Students of Madison, UW-Madison’s student government arm, lamented the provision, saying it could reduce revenue for campus organizations and student bus passes.
The leaders of the Legislature’s finance committee announced Thursday they have removed the opt-out language from the budget, saying in a memo the provision is policy and not fiscal.
ASM spokesman Jason Klein applauded the move, saying in a statement it will have a positive impact on students across the UW System by continuing funding for student services.
