OPINION:
Danggg. Rep. Maxine Waters just wants to send everybody to jail.
On a recent MSNBC “All In” episode, the congresswoman everybody in TV wants to go live with — can you say watching a train wreck as it unfolds? — said Fox News host Bill O’Reilly ought to be behind bars. And as every good Waters’ watcher already knows, this is where she envisions President Donald Trump living, as well.
So hold on, here we go. Here are the latest Waters’ World views — not to be confused with Watters’ World, of Jesse Watters-Fox News fame.
The context of the discussion was Trump’s reaction to the sexual harassment allegations swirling about O’Reilly. Trump just said that O’Reilly was a “good person,” and that he didn’t believe the Fox giant did anything wrong.
Waters, to put it mildly, disagreed.
“It is coming out of the mouth of a man who has said some horrible things about women,” the California Democrat said, Breitbart noted. “Don’t forget, [Trump] talked about grabbing women by their private parts and because he was important, he could get away with it and so they are two of a kind.”
To clarify: She meant Trump and O’Reilly are two of a kind — and in her view, two of a misogynist mind. Again, to put it mildly.
“And so I am not surprised he stood up and tried to defend Bill O’Reilly,” she continued. “But it’s all catching up with Bill O’Reilly and that sexual harassment enterprise that they created over there at Fox. And it’s catching up with them and you have over 30 advertisers who have taken away their advertising.”
That’s true; dozens of advertisers have taken their spots off “The O’Reilly Factor,” or changed course on their planned ad buys for the show.
But calling Fox a “sexual harassment enterprise,” as Waters then did, might be a bit of a stretch.
And so, too, this: “If they continue to do this in the way that they’ve done it, they need to go to jail. You know the president’s over there talking about Susan Rice going to jail. They need to go to jail. Bill O’Reilly needs to go to jail. And so, I just want you to know that the president didn’t do himself any good standing up for O’Reilly. And where was Ivanka? She’s supposed to be his adviser. She’s supposed to be the one that is standing up for women. I think she either advised [her father] wrong or she is absent. She’s not in it.”
She needs to go to jail — oh wait, Waters didn’t say that. Yet. But here’s a quick takeaway from all this send ’em all to jail messaging she put out in TV Land: America generally frowns upon sending people to jail who’ve not been convicted of crimes. How about we dial back the jail talk a bit and wait until there’s a conviction — or maybe even a formal filing of criminal charges that is then proceeded through court? That’s an idea the left seems to have trouble embracing of late.
