AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - Maine Democrats say their budget proposal will offer the largest property tax cut in state history, while investing in education and jobs.
Democratic lawmakers on Thursday said their “Opportunity Agenda” would help working Mainers get ahead.
Increasing state revenues from economic growth, recreational marijuana and previously uncollected online revenues would fund $264 million in initiatives.
Democrats are fighting against Republican Gov. Paul LePage’s two-year $6.8 billion budget, which calls for corporate tax cuts, a flat income tax by 2020 and broadening the sales tax. LePage wants to delay a 3 percent surtax on high earners that voters approved.
Democrats’ proposal includes $83 million to increase the homestead exemption and expand a property tax credit.
Their proposal would fund efforts to fight the opioid epidemic and increase reimbursement rates for direct care workers.
