MILWAUKEE (AP) - The family of a Milwaukee building inspector who was fatally shot on the job is thanking the community for its support.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (https://bit.ly/2p1tCxO ) reports that three suspects have been charged with killing Greg “Ziggy” Zyszkiewicz during an attempted carjacking last month.
Zyszkiewicz was a longtime special enforcement inspector for the Department of Neighborhood Services. The job deals with the most serious problem properties in Milwaukee.
Zyszkiewicz’s children thanked Milwaukee police “for treating our dad as if he were one of their own.” The family said Gov. Scott Walker, Mayor Tom Barrett and other city officials have also been comforting and supportive.
“We are reminded that in such a tragedy there is still more good in this city than evil,” the family said in a statement. “We hope that our dad’s legacy will remind people to live life to the fullest, to shower those you care about with love and that evil will never erase good.”
Police found Zyszkiewicz in his vehicle while responding to a call on March 22 about a person slumped over the steering wheel.
Deshaun Scott, 17, is charged with first-degree reckless homicide. Qhualun Shaw, also 17, and 21-year-old Eric Smiley are charged with felony murder. All three are also accused of party to armed robbery.
A criminal complaint alleges the three suspects were riding in a stolen vehicle when they saw Zyszkiewicz’s car, and Scott took a shotgun to carjack the vehicle. The document says the other two suspects heard a shot, saw Scott running back toward them, and they later drove off.
Shaw later told police that Scott said he panicked and fired when Zyszkiewicz grabbed for him, according to the complaint.
