PAWTUCKET, R.I. (AP) - The chairman of the Pawtucket Red Sox says the team now wants a “publicly owned” stadium to be built in Pawtucket.
The Providence Journal reports (https://bit.ly/2o5wnRH ) that Larry Lucchino made the comments Monday during a meeting about the city’s future.
Lucchino says negotiations with city and state leaders are focusing on two riverfront parcels near Interstate 95. He didn’t estimate how much it would cost.
The Triple-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox plays at Pawtucket’s McCoy Stadium. A recent study suggested there would be minimal return for Rhode Island to renovate the 75-year-old stadium or rebuild at the same site.
The team in 2015 proposed building a privately owned stadium on riverfront land in Providence. Its proposal seeking about $120 million from taxpayers was met by strenuous public opposition.
