ST. ALBANS, W.Va. (AP) - An official says two people have died after being hit by a CSX train in West Virginia.

Sgt. Brian Humphries with the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office told news outlets a man and a woman were struck before daybreak Tuesday as they walked along a trestle over the Coal River.

A statement from the sheriff’s office says another train conductor saw the two walking on the tracks and warned the oncoming train. The statement says the conductor began slowing down, but didn’t have enough time stop before striking the two.

Their identities were not immediately released.

CSX said in a statement that officials are cooperating with the investigation.
