MANTEO, N.C. (AP) - One emergency call center will serve three coastal North Carolina counties in an agreement that officials say is a precedent they believe will spread across the state.

The Virginian-Pilot of Norfolk, Virginia, reports (https://bit.ly/2nYvLN6) officials from Dare, Hyde and Tyrrell counties cut the ribbon Monday on the call center in Manteo.

The $14 million center will house 911 communications apparatus for the three counties. It also provides an emergency operations center for Dare County where first-responders and storm-damage assessors can live during a hurricane.

The building can withstand winds of up to 150 mph.

Hyde County manager Bill Rich says the agreement among the three counties for a 911 center is the first in the state. He says he believes other counties will have to consolidate 911 centers eventually.
