EDGEWATER, Fla. (AP) - An air safety investigator says two single-engine airplanes had been flying in formation with at least four other aircraft when they collided midair over Interstate 95 in central Florida.

Todd Gunther of the National Transportation Safety Board says the collision between the Cessna 170 and the Grumman Tiger left a quarter-mile-long line of debris before hitting the ground in a wooded field in Edgewater.

The crash Saturday morning killed the two pilots. The victims’ names haven’t been released.

Gunther told The Daytona Beach News-Journal (https://bit.ly/2oBkGQD ) that a preliminary inspection at the crash site didn’t show any structural or electrical failure in either aircraft.

The wreckage was removed Sunday afternoon.

Gunther said the planes took off from Spruce Creek Airport in Port Orange and investigators were trying to confirm their destination.
