AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Joseph “Ray” Perry, the father of U.S. Energy Secretary and former Texas governor Rick Perry, has died. He was 92.

Jo Pogue of Smith Family Funeral Home in Haskell said the Haskell resident died at Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene after a short illness.

The elder Perry spent decades as a rural West Texas county commissioner.

Rick Perry tweeted Friday: “Here’s to a life well lived, Dad. Thank you for the blessings you gave us, and we will miss you every day.”

Rick Perry’s successor as Texas governor, Greg Abbott, said in a statement that “Ray Perry was a true Texan in every sense of the word,” embodying “the values of faith, family and freedom that we in the Lone Star State hold dear.”
