NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) - Leaders in a Rhode Island city are planning to study the feasibility of a water bottle refilling station program.
The Daily News reports (https://bit.ly/2qdPavq ) that the Newport city council has agreed to study outfitting the city with refilling stations. The council decided either a resident led committee or the Newport Energy and Environment Commission will conduct the evaluation.
Thousands of littered water bottles were found in the city last year by volunteers. The proposed project is an effort to curb that plastic waste.
Advocates of the plan say residents could use reusable bottles and fill up throughout the city at filling stations to avoid littering.
However, critics ask how the stations will be maintained and add that the city already has water fountains.
