SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) - U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos visited a San Bernardino elementary school where a teacher and 8-year-old student were fatally shot.

DeVos visited North Park Elementary on Friday. Officials say she ate lunch with students, visited classrooms and spoke with teachers.

DeVos says it was inspiring to hear from family members and friends of teacher Karen Elaine Smith and 8-year-old Jonathan Martinez. The two were killed April 10 when Smith’s estranged husband opened fire in her classroom.

A photo released by the school district also showed DeVos hugging 9-year-old Nolan Brandy, who had been shot and wounded. He was released from the hospital days after the shooting.

DeVos says her heart ached during the visit, but her “spirit soared to see the resiliency of the students and staff.”
