NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A New Orleans city council member says he’s preparing a resolution critical of the city’s district attorney.
Jason Williams is a frequent critic of District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro. In a Friday news release, Williams said his resolution will focus in part on a recent report by the watchdog group Court Watch NOLA. The report was critical of New Orleans prosecutors’ jailing of at least six crime victims, including a rape victim, to make them testify.
Cannizzaro’s office was critical of that report’s focus on the single sexual assault victim and said prosecutors are more concerned with combatting the city’s numerous shootings and killings.
Williams says he’ll ask the council to vote on a resolution demanding that no victims of domestic violence or sex crimes be arrested on material witness warrants.
