NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) - The city of Newport is receiving a $1 million state grant to start construction on a 1.6-mile bike path.

The Newport Daily News (https://bit.ly/2pD7VIO ) reports the path will connect the Newport Gateway Visitors Center to the Community College of Rhode Island Newport County campus.

The grant comes from the $35 million Green Economy Bond voters approved in November. Bond recipients say they will create 10 new miles of bike paths.

Bari Freeman, executive director of the nonprofit organization Bike Newport, says the island “desperately needs” a path so that cyclists are not riding alongside cars.

The new bike path will run along the rail line that spans the island’s three communities, similar to the East Bay Bike Path that connects Providence to Bristol.
