PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The Deloitte consulting firm is providing Rhode Island with a $27 million credit to cover costs of the faulty rollout of the state’s new benefits system.
The state Department of Human Services says the credit from the New York-based company will help pay for a temporary hiring surge to address a backlog of applications for food stamps and other public benefits.
The computer system has been beset by problems since launching in September, causing delays in distributing benefits and the resignations of top health care and human services officials. Thousands of people were affected.
The state has been withholding payments to contractor Deloitte Consulting and blamed it for delivering a defective system.
Democratic Gov. Gina Raimondo said Thursday she’s heartened that Deloitte is making good-faith efforts to offset unanticipated expenses.
