MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - The Vermont Legislature is considering a proposal that would add two full-time police officers to work on the state’s unsolved murders and missing-persons cases.
The Burlington Free Press (https://bfpne.ws/2oLyF5W ) reports there are about 55 unsolved homicides and 35 suspicious cases of missing people in Vermont.
State police have no cold case division, but a nine-member Major Crimes unit works on cold cases alongside new homicides and police-involved shootings.
Public Safety Commissioner Thomas Anderson says the old cases are important, but he’s not sure a legislative mandate would be the correct approach.
The bill lawmakers are considering doesn’t add more funding for the two positions, and it’s unclear if the measure will reach Republican Gov. Phil Scott’s desk by the time lawmakers head home for the year early next month.
