President Trump criticized the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals on Wednesday in a series of tweets over a ruling blocking his administration from halting funds to sanctuary cities.

“First the Ninth Circuit rules against the ban & now it hits again on sanctuary cities-both ridiculous rulings. See you in the Supreme Court!!” Mr. Trump tweeted.

He continued, “Out of our very big country, with many choices, does everyone notice that both the ’ban’ case and now the ’sanctuary’ case is brought in the Ninth Circuit, which has a terrible record of being overturned (close to 80%). They used to call this ’judge shopping!’ Messy system.”

On Tuesday, Judge William H. Orrick, a district judge in California, ruled that the Trump administration cannot withhold funds from sanctuary cities as a result of two lawsuits brought against the administration. Judge Orrick does not sit on the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, but those judges would be the ones to hear the appeal to his ruling, which the Trump administration has said it will do.

Mr. Trump’s Justice Department has threatened to withhold federal funding to sanctuary cities, known as cities that limit cooperation with the federal government on deporting illegal immigrants.
