Caitlyn Jenner says she may run for the U.S. Senate in California when longtime Sen. Dianne Feinstein, a Democrat, decides to retire.
The revelation by the Olympic decathlete, formerly known as Bruce Jenner, came in an interview talk with the Daily Beast published Wednesday.
Ms. Jenner, a generally conservative Republican, initially backed Texas Sen. Ted Cruz in the 2016 presidential contest and later supported Donald Trump after the nomination.
“I feel like, where can I do the most good?” she said. “Can I do the most good in the position that I’m in right now — which is kind of on the outside and playing the game politically for our community?”
“Or would it be better to be on the inside? I don’t know that yet. And I’ll probably figure that out in the future,” the gold-medalist turned reality-TV star said.
Elsewhere in the interview, Ms. Jenner criticized President Trump, admitting she’s “not very excited over the first 100 days of the Trump administration” and singling out Attorney General Jeff Sessions, a social conservative who previously served in the Senate from Alabama, as a Cabinet member deserving of disapproval on transgender-rights issues.
“He’s the bigger problem,” Ms. Jenner said. “Trump is the middle of the road. I ultimately hold him responsible.”
The reality TV star did have praise, however, for Education Secretary Betsy DeVos. “She’s actually on our side. She’s extraordinarily good,” Ms. Jenner said.
Ms. DeVos reportedly initially objected to Mr. Trump’s call to rescind an Obama administration directive regarding bathroom use by transgender students in public schools.
