RUSSIAN WITH HIV SEEKING US ASYLUM IS DETAINED IN FLORIDA
Denis Davydov has been held in an immigration detention facility in Miami for more than a month after a trip to the U.S. Virgin Islands. Customs officers clearing passengers out of St. Thomas took the 30-year-old man into custody on suspicion he overstayed his visa, despite his pending asylum case. Customs and Border Protection spokesman Jaime Ruiz said he could not comment on specific cases.
500 DISNEY WORLD WORKERS AFFECTED IF HAITIAN STATUS ENDS
Union officials and Haitian workers on Wednesday demanded that the Trump administration extend the protected status for about 50,000 Haitian workers living in the United States under temporary protected status. The designation is given to citizens of other countries who face economic hardship because of natural disasters or conflicts. Tens of thousands of Haitians came to the United States after an earthquake in 2010.
FLORIDA TEEN SHOOTS SISTER AFTER BIRTHDAY HUG
Miami-Dade Police say 17-year-old Martaevious Santiago told officers it was an accident. They say Santiago told them he was horsing around with his 13-year-old sister Tedra King while he and a friend were handling a loaded handgun at their Florida City home Tuesday night. He said King gave him a birthday hug and he accidentally shot her as she turned away.
CONVICTION OVERTURNED FOR FORMER FLORIDA STATE PROFESSOR
A federal appeals court has thrown out a 2015 conviction and 13-month sentence for a former Florida State professor accused of stealing money from a business school fund set up to teach students about investing. The 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled Wednesday that prosecutors had failed to show that James Doran had embezzled money from an organization that receives federal money.
FORMER FLORIDA REP. ERIK FRESEN PLEADS GUILTY TO TAX EVASION
Court records show Fresen pleaded guilty Wednesday to failing to file a federally required tax return. The 40-year-old Republican had represented the Miami area in the Florida House of Representatives from 2008 to 2016. Court records show Fresen and his wife failed to file a tax return in 2012 for more than $270,000 of total gross income the previous year.
