Pepco applies to launch electric car pilot program

WASHINGTON (AP) - The power utility in Washington wants to expand infrastructure for electric cars in the city.

Pepco submitted a proposal to city regulators on Tuesday to launch a pilot program to provide discounted rates and other amenities to electric car owners.

If regulators approve the program, 100 Pepco customers who already have equipment to charge their vehicles will be eligible for a special rate for the power they use. Another 50 customers will get a discount on installation of a charging station.

Pepco also wants to install chargers in up to 10 apartment or condo buildings and install four chargers around the city for the public to use.

Pepco is a subsidiary of Exelon Corp. and has more than 800,000 customers in Washington and its Maryland suburbs.
